Rebels blow 31-10 halftime lead

      <dc:subject>WJTV Sports</dc:subject>

Ole Miss quarterback Nathan Stanley threw for three touchdown passes, but it wasn’t enough as Jacksonville State quarterback Coty Blanchard completed a 2-point conversion pass to Calvin Middleton in double overtime as the Gamecocks pulled off a stunning 49-48 victory over Ole Miss on Saturday.

Blanchard threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Kevyn Cooper on fourth-and-15 to pull within 48-47 in the second overtime. Then, the Gamecocks made the call to go for the win in the season opener for both teams.

Jacksonville State, a Football Championship Subdivision team from the Ohio Valley Conference, trailed 31-10 at halftime but outscored Ole Miss 21-3 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Jeremiah Masoli made his much-anticipated debut for Ole Miss after being cleared by the NCAA on Friday. He completed 7 of 10 passes for 109 yards and one interception.

Ole Miss is 6-6 all-time in overtime games.

It’s the first time Jacksonville State has beaten a Football Bowl Subdivision team since Sept. 27, 2001, when the Gamecocks beat Arkansas State.

The Ole Miss offense, which debuted eight new starters, scored on five of six first-half possessions, including four touchdowns. After that, Jacksonville State rolled.

Ole Miss kicker Bryson Rose made a 35-yard field goal to extend the Rebels’ lead to 34-26 with 2:55 left in regulation, but Jacksonville State drove the field for a touchdown to pull within 34-32 with 18.9 seconds left. Marques Ivory threw a 2-yard pass to La’Ray Williams for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 34 and send it to overtime.

Middleton rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown. The Gamecocks had no turnovers.

Using a two-quarterback system with Blanchard and Ivory, the duo combined to complete 22 of 36 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns.

Ole Miss’ Brandon Bolden rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries

Masoli ruled ineligible for 2010

      <dc:subject>WJTV Sports</dc:subject>

he NCAA has denied Mississippi quarterback
Jeremiah Masoli’s request for a waiver that would allow him to play
immediately, meaning he won’t be eligible until 2011.
The school has announced plans to the appeal the ruling, with a
response expected in less than a week.
Masoli transferred from Oregon to Mississippi after being kicked
off Oregon’s team after two run-ins with police.
The senior has already completed his undergraduate degree, and

Quarterbacks Headline Ole Miss Football Newcomers

Houston Nutt addresses the Media

      <dc:subject>WJTV Sports</dc:subject>

Highlighted by a pair of heralded quarterbacks, Ole Miss welcomed a group of new faces to its football program Friday as newcomers reported for the start of preseason camp.

Notable amongst the list is QB transfers Jeremiah Masoli from Oregon and Randall Mackey from East Mississippi Community College. Mackey has been working out with the team since June after enrolling at Ole Miss for first summer term.

Other 2010 signees that enrolled in the summer include Will Denny, Jared Duke, Martez Eastland, Terrence Hackney, Clarence Jackson, Carlton Martin, Brishen Matthews and Carlos Thompson. In addition, three signees—freshman Chase Hughes and JUCO transfers Wayne Dorsey and Damien Jackson—arrived at Ole Miss in January and participated in spring drills.

“We’re excited,“ Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt told reporters at Friday’s press conference. “We’ve got most of our freshmen reporting today. We will have our first organized meeting tonight. We had a good summer. Now it’s time to go. We’re looking forward to it.

“It’s been a different summer. We don’t usually recruit in August. Jeremiah Masoli is here now, going through the process of checking in and all those things. We’re excited about him being here.”

Nutt said that other members of the Rebels’ 15th-ranked signing class will be joining the team for camp in the days to come.

“I feel good about the ones that are not here right now,“ he said. “I feel good about those guys being qualified. A lot of them didn’t get to go to first-session summer school and went to second-session only, and it makes it tough for the turnaround - to get transcripts and grades back on transcripts. I feel good about the guys that we signed and eventually they will be here.”

The Rebel varsity players will report to fall camp Saturday, while practice begins Sunday. Fans will have the opportunity for a sneak peak at the squad, as workouts the first week will be open to the public. Sunday’s practice begins at 4:25 p.m. CT, and the weekday workouts are set for 5:20 p.m. The time of Saturday’s scrimmage, which is the final open practice, will be announced at a later date at twitter.com/OleMissNow.

Use of cellular phones and cameras are prohibited for fans at practice, and fans must remain in the designated area. When the team practices outdoors, fans are not allowed between the practice fields.

Ole Miss newcomers reporting to camp Friday included:
Cliff Coleman
Will Denny
Wayne Dorsey
Jared Duke
Martez Eastland
Terrence Hackney
Witt Haggard

Ole Miss’ Jerrell Powe earned his highest preseason praise yet, being named first team All-SEC Tuesday by the league coaches.

Powe, a defensive tackle, has been a popular preseason first team all-conference pick this summer by the various media outlets, many of which tabbed him an All-America. He has also been selected to watch lists for some of college football’s top awards, including the Outland Trophy, Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Rotary Lombardi Award.

Powe will join fellow defensive lineman Kentrell Lockett, offensive tackle Bradley Sowell and head coach Houston Nutt in representing Ole Miss at the SEC Football Media Days on Friday. The Rebels’ session begins at 10:50 a.m. CT, and live coverage is available on ESPNU and SECSports.com.

A starter in 10 games last season, Powe helped lead a Rebel defense that topped the SEC and rank 11th nationally in TFLs and 14th in sacks. Ole Miss held the opposition under 300 yards of total offense seven times, including five SEC games, and ranked 15th in the nation in scoring defense.

Powe earned second Team All-SEC accolades and tied for eighth in the conference and the team lead in TFLs with 12.0. The Waynesboro, Miss., native also totaled 34 tackles, three sacks, two pressures and a forced fumble.
