Rebels Fall To No. 8 Lousiville 6-1 in 12 Innings

Drew Pomeranz struck out 12 batters and allowed only one run on three hits to lead a Rebels pitching staff that posted 17 strikeouts on the night, but it wasn’t enough as No. 17 Ole Miss (11-3) fell to No. 8 Louisville (13-0) by a score of 6-1 in 12 innings on Friday.
Pomeranz struck out 12 and freshman Brett Huber fanned five while allowing only four hits and one run in 10.2 innings of work, but Louisville used a big 12th inning to claim the win.
David Goforth (0-1) suffered the loss as he allowed five runs - one earned - on four hits in 1.1 inning of work. The sophomore entered the game in the 11th inning with two own and a man on first but got the Rebels out of the inning with a pop up to short.
Louisville then used the four hits and a fielding error at shortstop to push five runs across in the 12th inning and claim the 6-1 win.
Neil Holland (2-0) grabbed the win in relief for the Cardinals as he worked 2.1 innings and struck out four while holding the Rebels without a hit down the stretch.
“It was a great college baseball game and was a typical Friday night with two aces going at each other,“ said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “It’s tough to lose tonight because we had lots of opportunities. We had eight walks from a team that doesn’t normally walk people and we couldn’t get the hit when we got the runners in scoring position.“
Louisville struck first, pushing a run across the plate in the third inning when Adam Duvall came to the plate with two outs and homered down the left field line after working the count full.
Ole Miss got the run back in the sixth when Tanner Mathis singled through the right side to score Matt Smith. Smith singled to open the inning and then moved to third on a groundout from David Phillips. He then took third on a fly out from Zach Miller before scoring on the Mathis hit.
The two teams battled from there with both pitching staffs holding the other team’s hitters at bay.
Louisville broke through in the 12th, however. With one out on the board, Stewart Ijames doubled off the wall in right center to get things started. An error by the shortstop on a grounder up the middle allowed Zak Wasserman to reach base while Ijames moved to third. J.J. Ethel then doubled down the third base line to drive in both runners and put Louisville in the lead.
A single from Kyle Grieshaber drove in Jarred Clarkson who entered the game to run for Ethel and extend the lead to 4-1. Duvall then hit his second home run of the night with a shot to left field that drove in two more runs and gave the Cardinals the 6-1 advantage.
Ole Miss could not muster a rally in the bottom half of the frame as Louisville claimed the win.
The Rebels and Cardinals will take the field for the second game of the series at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Ole Miss is expected to send senior right-hander Aaron Barrett to the mound, while Louisville is expected to pitch left-hander Dean Kiekhefer.
